The Institute of Civil Defence and Disaster Studies (ICDDS)

The Institute is the longest serving academic institution in the world wholly dedicated to civil protection and disaster mitigation research. Established in 1938, the Institute of Civil Defence (ICD) as it then was, sought to raise public awareness to the threat of air attack in the event of war, and through training, enable the civil population to effectively implement or participate in emergency response procedures.

At the end of the Second World War, Civil Defence concerns were directed towards the nuclear threat of the Cold War.
During the past decade research and training moved forward to encompass the ''all hazards'' approach to civil protection in peace time.
The founders of the ICD were committed to public preparedness through training and educational research; todays ICDDS maintains that focused commitment.
The institute publishes their journal ''ALERT'' every quarter year.
